Burning the Man, Burning Man 2006 Every year, thousands gather in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for Burning Man, an eight-day-long festival ending on Labor Day.
The event is described as an expe-rimental community, a communal experience that promotes free self-expression and demands self-reliance. The massive campground, known as Black Rock City, sits on a dried prehistoric lake bed 90-miles northeast of Reno. Sculptures rise from the dust of the playa, and theme camps surround a large wooden sculpture simple called, the Man. The festival is part gallery, but demands that all participate in the collective art experience. This year?s Burning Man drew nearly 40,000 from across the globe on the night of the ritual burning of the 40-foot wooden Man.
